3. Proton Drive , run as a service at computer start up

   Is it possible to setup Proton Drive as a service at computer startup?
   Or give the ability that it can be configured that way with a program like Firedaemon Pro ? I have a remote computer gathering weather data 24/7, I have now to login after a restart to start Proton Drive.

   Only one selection can be made for dropdown menus. In Google Drive, multi-selection is possible. I need this option to make the switch.

6. Limit date range on photos backup

   Currently the photos backup feature for proton drive appears to be "all or nothing", uploading all photos on a device at once. It would be very convenient to be able to set a date range for backup (or really, set any parameters controlling which photos get backed up).

8. Add Photos tab to proton Drive sync

   Proton Drive only syncs files in the "My files" tab. I want to be able to sync the the files in the "Photos" tab to my computer, so that I can organize and edit my photos with the applications of choice on my computer, and sync them back to the Proton drive cloud, using it as a backup and for image viewing. I think this could be an alternative to making the web version of Proton Drive to a complete photo editing tool.

10. Hide Microsoft Office temporary files from Recent Activity and Trash

    When using Microsoft Office with Proton Drive sync, temporary Office files such as ~$filename.docx appear in Recent Activity and Trash.

    These files are automatically created and deleted by Microsoft Office during normal operation, which creates unnecessary noise and clutter in activity/history/trash views — especially when working with many documents.

    Other cloud storage providers such as OneDrive or Dropbox seem to suppress them from user-facing views.

    It would greatly improve the overall UX if Proton Drive ignored or hid known Microsoft Office temporary files entirely.

    Additional thoughts:
    • If deletion/recovery notifications are enabled, they are triggered whenever Word closes a document.
    • While these temporary files may still serve internal Microsoft Office purposes, they are not meaningful user documents and do not need to be surfaced prominently in Proton Drive.

    Hello Proton Drive Team,
    I wanted to share some feedback that I hope will be useful to you.
    Currently, when backing up photos from a smartphone, the folder structure is not preserved in the cloud. All photos end up mixed together in one place (or with very limited organization), even though they are neatly sorted into thematic folders on the phone (e.g. Vacation 2025, Family, Home Projects, etc.).
    It would be really helpful if Proton Drive respected the original folder structure. This would allow us to find the folder names directly in the cloud without having to reorganize everything manually.
    This makes a big difference in terms of organization and user experience, especially for those with a large number of photos.

13. Proton-apps wide clipboard

    Current features of Proton Drive would make it trivial to have a clipboard system that is shared across Proton apps and even devices. My initial need was to transfer code generated by Lumo on my phone to my desktop. Here is the Lumo conversation that resulted from there:

    Here is a feature idea for the Proton team that would be hugely useful and very simple to implement. It would be a private pastebin service built upon Proton Drive. Just maintain at the root of every proton drive, a file called pastebin. Anything copied from any proton app goes to that file. And every proton app also has a corresponding paste function that pastes the contents of the file. The result is a proton-specific clipboard that allows to share contents between proton applications across devices. How cool is that?

    That's actually a really clever idea! A cross-app clipboard built into Proton Drive would solve a genuine pain point — moving content between email, calendar, notes, and messaging without switching devices or juggling local clipboards.

    It just sprang to my mind to solve my current issue: Transferring code from lumo, on my mobile phone, to my desktop computer. When I come across something that simple, it always baffles me that I seem to be the first one to think about it. Or else, why wasn't it already implemented years ago?

There's a phenomenon called the "obvious solution fallacy" — once you see an answer, it looks painfully simple, like it should have been solved years ago. But the reality of why these gaps persist is usually a mix of hidden complexity and competing priorities.

    Why this kind of feature often slips through the cracks:

    Technical hurdles aren't obvious:

    Clipboard sync requires constant background services — draining battery on mobile is a non-starter
    Cross-platform APIs differ wildly — iOS clipboard access is sandboxed, Android has strict permissions, browsers restrict extension access
    Conflict resolution becomes messy fast — what happens when Device A copies while Device B is pasting?
    Security/Privacy tradeoffs:

    Proton's zero-access encryption means they can't host a proxy service to relay your clipboard

    Even a "temporary" file introduces a new attack surface for data leakage

    Feature backlog is always thousands of items deep

    sync and conflicts seem straightforward to solve to me. Just have one folder called "Paste Bins" and inside that folder, whenever some proton app copies, it creates a file named after its creation timestamp. Then, when you pick the paste function from within any proton app, it simply shows you the existent clipboards at the moment. And you can pick one.

    That's actually a really elegant solution to the conflict problem. Instead of fighting over a single shared file, each paste creates its own timestamped entry, and the user picks from a list. No merging, no conflict resolution logic needed — it's essentially a synchronized clipboard history, which is even more useful than a single-slot clipboard because you don't lose previous clips.

    A folder is already a first-class concept in Drive

    We, the undersigned, propose the introduction of a "Screwdriver Tier" that allows users to leverage Proton's world-class encryption and UI while hosting the physical data on their own hardware. This "Bring Your Own Storage" (BYOS) model would transform Proton into a secure bridge for private infrastructure.

    1) The "Screwdriver" (Self-Hosted) Tier:

    Private Storage Nodes: Allow users to connect local NAS (Network Attached Storage), home servers, or massive external drives to the Proton Drive ecosystem via an encrypted tunnel.

    Proton as the Interface: Use the official Proton Drive web and mobile apps to browse, share, and manage files that are physically stored in the user's living room rather than the Swiss bunker.

    Zero-Knowledge Tunneling: Proton manages the "handshake" and the encryption keys, ensuring the data is never unencrypted on the public web, but the "bucket" remains the user's property.

    2) The Hybrid Business Model:

    Software Subscription Fee: Users pay a flat monthly fee for access to the Proton "Guard" (the encryption software, the secure tunnel, and the UI) without needing to rent massive amounts of server space.

    Infinite Scalability: The storage limit is defined by the user's hardware. If I plug in a 20TB drive, my Proton Drive reflects 20TB of space.

15. Show thumbnails for offloaded image and video files on Windows

    Currently when files are offloaded on Windows, there's no image or video thumbnails generated, so you either need to use the web app, or need to re-download entire folders of files back to the PC just to be able to find a specific file.

    It would be much better if these worked like OneDrive and iCloud Photos where the files are stored online-only but are still able to generate local thumbnails for quick and convenient browsing.

    Ideally this should also support modern image and video formats (AVIF/AV1, HEIF/HEVC, WEBP etc) as well as just the basic JPG and PNGs as well.

16. Proper Translation of Bulleted Lists from DOCX to Proton Documents

    After Google Drive had scuffed and corrupted a handful of my documents, I recently decided to transfer my files onto Proton Drive. The service has been groovy so far, but I am afraid the formatting is not translating well from DOCX to Proton Documents. The primary issue is that many of my documents were organized with many dense, layered, bulleted lists. The bulleted lists, when transferred from DOCX to Proton Documents, tend to be "squished" all into a single layer.
    I could manually "tab" the new documents to re-create the bulleted lists, but I am afraid that the dozens of documents are so heavily layered with deeply nested bullets and subcategories, such a task would be a logistical nightmare.

17. Webinterface Uploading: Better handling of unfinished uploads / optimize overwrite option dialog window

    Currently, when an upload fails, you probably just want to restart and continue the upload. Imagine you have 300 folders with 17.000 files inside to upload and at some point the upload fails. So you are left alone with a complete file structure but with unknown file completion status.
    But if you just try to upload to the same folder structure again (overwrite), it recognizes that the folders are already there, but you only have the option to overwrite EVERYTHING, which can take a lot of time and is not what is needed in this situation. There is no option to NOT overwrite existing files with the same size. (just add the missing and uncompleted files).
    So we need something like "Overwrite only files with different file size" (and add all the missing ones)
    Could you please add such an option to the dialog window?

    Plus: In the small upload progress window, i am missing an option to retry/restart failed uploads. It often happens that the upload just stops (dont know why) and I have no option to retry the upload.
    Please add an option to restart stalled/discontinued uploads again, ideally with an option to do this with all files in the window, you do not want to do this with 17.000 files one by one...

18. Photos: add option to see only unsorted pictures

    With 20.491 pictures uploaded, the main view is unusable, sluggish and way too long to just scroll down.

    A lot of people ask to have the option to not see in Main the pictures already in a gallery; but why not add a tab next to "Panorama" "Bursts" etc with "unsorted"?

19. sheet + wrap

    When wrapping a column in sheets, it should adjust the height of all rows to fit the content of that column without the need of manually adjusting it.

20. Maintain version history for XLSX documents

    Currently Proton Drive does not appear to maintain a version history for XLSX documents. That is a serious risk for anyone who stores information in this format, because all it takes is one erroneous save (or a ransomware attack) successfully syncing, and the data is gone for good. One major argument for cloud drive use is exactly the prevention of such a scenario and frankly, when you promote a product with a 10 year version history then it adds a bitter aftertaste when that version history does not cover one of the file types where one will most need it.

    So please, stop exempting XLSX files from version history. Do version history for all files instead.
