Remove dependance on google play services
Protonmail android app is dependent on google play services and that is obviously against privacy and security.
Users who removed/disable google play services or used vanilla "lineageos" without gapps cannot get the mail client work properly.
Google play services collect every possible piece of info about the user; location, body sensors, application usage, and every other possible thing. So telling the use to enable/install google services you compromise his privacy and security by 3rd party app which is clearly against the idea if Protomail.
I hope you can correct this and have no dependence on google at all.

I don't understand anyone who want Protonmail to use the same tools as Google. Google is a complete security breech and invasion to our privacy. If someone wants these added "conveniences" they should go back to Google. Protecting our privacy isn't always convenient. I chose Privacy over convenience. This is why i chose Protonmail. Protonmail...please don't compromise our privacy and security to be competitive, cutting edge, or convenient. If you can make our email more convenient without compromising privacy than do so. Otherwise, i vote to maintain security and privacy as your number one goal.

What if the user can download the app directly from the official site of protonmail.com

I can live without the notifications and check my email "manually"
I can live with downloading the APK install file from your secure website but would prefer F-DroidBut please don't insult your users by keeping this Google dependency.

+1 My android is de-googled and Protonmail is near useless without notifications. Whatsapp works, my old email app works, come on Protonmail, there needs to be another way.

I would vote this up, but it is closed. I completely agree with the last comment and don't consider this done. I use protonmail because i do not want to use google. So i do not want to use google services either.

Protonmail needs to remove the dependency on Google Play Services to be taken as a serious privacy orientated email solution. Until this happens unfortunately Protonmail is not ready for mobile use.

PLEASE add an option to periodically poll protonmail servers directly.
Users who are serious about privacy disable all google services, even on stock android builds.
You are currently punishing your most privacy-conscious users by denying them new mail notifications (arguably a major piece of functionality for a mobile app).

@anonymous - There is an APK (a few minor revisions old) available in admin's response to:

You are not google free until you remove the dependency on google cloud messaging for mobile notifications. Those of us with no google services on our android can not get notifications, which significantly limits the use of mobile email, if we have to go check it all the time.
Make an option to periodically poll protonmail servers manually!

you know, if you don't want to deal with f-droid (is it really harder than creating protonmail to begin with?), you could just place a link to *your .APK as a download that you can host yourselves, and I could install it on my phone myself. Then you don't have to deal with any other hosts.

This seems to be such an obvious requirement that I could just shake my head this wasn't the approach from the beginning...

Nonsense!!
Please, fix it as soon as possible. Meanwhile I won't install your app in my phone. -
