Request for better UserVoice standards for posters and moderators
NOTE: I want to make it clear that I will give credit where credit is due, for example seeing examples of truly excellent engagement, such as the detailed explanation for the 'Metadata encryption' idea, which was transparent and thoughtful. I also had a fantastic experience with Proton Docs (Drive) customer service, who the agent (who I will not name for PRIVACY) did a great job of assisting me. This shows Proton can communicate effectively.

TL;DR: Proton's UserVoice platform faces significant management challenges. My detailed post critiquing it was [DECLINED ❌] with the ironic "Please use UserVoice for feature requests" response, mirroring a pattern of high-voted ideas being [DECLINED ❌] with generic replies, often after years of waiting. This limited engagement with feedback, coupled with unmoderated spam and neglected [🟠 PLANNED] features, is impacting user trust and appears inconsistent with Proton's stated commitment to its community.
⚠️ IMPORTANT UPDATE: July 17, 2025
The issues outlined below have not only persisted but have escalated dramatically, revealing a pattern of moderation that limits engagement with user feedback and appears inconsistent with UserVoice's stated purpose.
This very post, intended to highlight UserVoice neglect, was [❌ DECLINED] by a Proton Admin with the response: "Please use Uservoice to raise feature requests." This ironic and dismissive reply perfectly encapsulates the core problem: a challenge in engaging with feedback about the platform itself.
A relentless wave of [❌ DECLINED] ideas today:
Multiple highly-voted ideas have been declined with generic, unhelpful, or circular responses. Examples include:
❌ [DECLINED] "Need More Products For Ecosystem” (53 votes)
Response: "Uservoice is for feature requests, please use it to raise specific functionality changes or additions."
❌ [DECLINED] "Focus on existing products" (146 votes)
Response: "Uservoice is for feature requests, please use it to raise specific functionality changes or additions." (again)
❌ [DECLINED] "Proton, buy Threema" (264 votes)
Response: "Uservoice is for feature requests, please use it to raise specific functionality changes or additions." (again)
Note: No, I don't expect aquisations every single day. However, at least some acknowledgement as to why would be helpful.
❌ [DECLINED] "Proton Mail on iOS Apple Mail app" (80 votes)
DECLINED after 7 years of waiting, with no reason why.
❌ [DECLINED] "USERVOICE NEGLETION" (3 votes)
(MY OWN POST, that speaks up) (https://protonmail.uservoice.com/forums/935538-accounts-payments/suggestions/50199909-uservoice-negletion)
DECLINED after 3 hours.
Decline vs Accept:
While comprehensive, constructive feedback (like this post) is declined, a highly critical post titled "Stop being a greedy subscription-pushing enterprise" (99 votes - https://protonmail.uservoice.com/forums/935538-accounts-payments/suggestions/49048040-stop-being-a-greedy-subscription-pushing-enterpris) remains [OPEN 🟢] on the front page. I do not know this comes about. This suggests a varied approach to moderation that appears to limit engagement with direct critiques of platform management while allowing other feedback.
Continued Neglect of [🟠PLANNED] items:
The "iPad iOS Version" idea (138 votes - https://protonmail.uservoice.com/forums/284483-proton-mail/suggestions/11555208-ipad-ios-version-rather-than-stretched-iphone-vers), marked [🟠PLANNED] in 2016, remains unfulfilled and un-updated after 9 years.
(By the way, an iPad version is still strangely non-existent, the new Proton Mail iOS app might fix this, but so far there's been no updates.)
Technical Issues:
The platform itself displays technical errors (e.g., CORS policy blocking images from S3), adding to the sense of disrepair. (Hint, for devtools, press F12 or ⌥+⌘+I)
This pattern of behavior suggests a need for improved management of community voice, to ensure UserVoice functions as a tool for engagement rather than perceived silencing.
I urge for change.

Update: Proton Authenticator - A Step Forward. Room for More
UPDATE: Littered with bugs - Touch ID support is terrible etc. Just do a quick search on the right and you’ll find out
Hello Proton Community,
You asked, and Proton delivered! I am excited to see the official release of the Proton Authenticator as a standalone application. This was a highly-voted idea (with over 642 votes!) on UserVoice, and it's a significant win for users who prefer a dedicated 2FA solution outside of Proton Pass. This is a clear demonstration that Proton can listen and respond to strong community demand, and it's a welcome addition to the ecosystem.
However, while this is a "BIG WIN," it also highlights a "Gigantic loss" in terms of comprehensive follow-through. Several closely related authenticator-focused ideas remain open and unaddressed on UserVoice. For a truly complete and user-centric solution, these should also be acknowledged and progressed:
Microsoft Autofill/Authenticator import
Yubikey support without authenticator app
Use Security Key without Authenticator App
Add a Proton Two-Step Authenticator
While we celebrate the new standalone authenticator, we urge Proton to review and provide updates on these interconnected ideas. A holistic approach to authentication features would further enhance user security and convenience, and demonstrate a commitment to fully addressing community feedback.
Let's continue to push for a complete and transparent roadmap for all authentication-related features.

UPDATE for Lumo Transparency:
Crucially, as of July 24, 2025, the official Lumo website (lumo.proton.me/about) still displays the original, contradictory information, showing a green checkmark next to "Deletes all logs of your chats" in the comparison table. This indicates that the promised correction has not yet been implemented. It has been implemented on the blog, but not there.

⚠️ IMPORTANT UPDATE 2: July 24, 2025 – Lumo & Transparency (Further UserNeglect Evidence)
Following the initial concerns regarding Lumo's launch and the decline of the "Commit to remaining free of any and all AI tools" idea, new evidence from public Reddit discussions further highlights Proton's challenges with transparency and internal consistency, reinforcing the "UserNeglect" thesis.
The specific UserVoice post: "Commit to remaining free of any and all AI tools" (https://protonmail.uservoice.com/forums/945460-general-ideas/suggestions/48446621-commit-to-remaining-free-of-any-and-all-ai-tools)
This idea garnered a massive 425 votes from the community, representing a strong collective desire for Proton to avoid AI integration.
It was officially [DECLINED ❌] by Proton on July 17, 2025, with a generic response, just five days before the prominent launch of Lumo, Proton's AI assistant. This sequence of events starkly highlights the disregard for significant community input on a core strategic direction.
In a recent Reddit thread discussing Lumo on r/ProtonVPN: https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonVPN/comments/1m757rl/comment/n4otjd7/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button, a user directly questioned Proton about Lumo's logging practices, specifically asking: "why keep logs in the first place (and then delete them). And how long are these logs kept...?"
A "Proton_Team" Admin initially responded with a categorical denial: "We don't have logs."
However, when confronted by the user with a direct reference to Proton's own Lumo marketing material that implied logging ("On lumo-ai check the image below 'Compare Lumo with other leading AI assistants'"), the Admin's response shifted: "Will pass this on. It should be 'no logging of your chats'."
Why this is critical evidence for "UserNeglect" and transparency issues:
Direct Contradiction from Proton Itself: This exchange reveals a profound internal disconnect. A Proton Admin publicly stated one thing ("We don't have logs"), only to admit seconds later that their own official website's documentation contradicts this, requiring a "fix." This is a monumental failure in internal communication and public-facing consistency.
Erosion of Trust on Core Privacy: For a "privacy-first AI assistant," clarity on logging is paramount. This public contradiction on such a fundamental privacy aspect severely erodes user trust and confidence in Lumo's (and by extension, Proton's) privacy claims.
Lack of Internal Alignment: It suggests a significant gap in knowledge or communication between Proton's product development, marketing, and community management teams. This internal disarray directly impacts the user's ability to trust the information provided by Proton.
Reinforces the "Silenced Voice" through Misdirection: While not a UserVoice decline, this incident demonstrates that even when users ask direct, critical questions on a public forum, the initial information provided by Proton can be inaccurate or misleading, leading to further confusion and undermining the user's ability to get clear answers.
This public Reddit exchange serves as undeniable proof that Proton struggles with maintaining consistent and accurate communication, even on core privacy features, further validating the systemic "UserNeglect" and transparency issues you have meticulously documented across their UserVoice platform.

⚠️ IMPORTANT UPDATE: July 23, 2025
A critical new development has emerged with the launch of "Lumo" and Proton's apparent push towards AI integration, which profoundly underscores the "UserNeglect" this post aims to highlight:
An idea titled "Commit to remaining free of any and all AI tools" (shared May 17, 2024), which garnered a massive 425 votes from the community, was recently [DECLINED] on July 17, 2025. https://protonmail.uservoice.com/forums/945460-general-ideas/suggestions/48446621-commit-to-remaining-free-of-any-and-all-ai-tools
This idea raised fundamental concerns about Proton's strategic direction, ethical implications (e.g., exploitation of human labor, environmental impact, degradation of information quality), and the company's historical stance as a privacy-first alternative to big tech.
Proton's justification for declining this widely supported and ethically significant idea was the generic: "Uservoice is for feature requests, please use it to raise specific pieces of functionality." This response dismisses a core community concern by rigidly defining the platform's scope, effectively silencing a critical voice on a strategic matter. I have seen this response on 7 other posts.
Adding to the irony and frustration, there are observations that these new AI tools (presumably related to Lumo) do not even function correctly or are incompatible with existing core Proton services like Proton VPN. This creates a severe disconnect: Proton is declining a principled, highly-voted community objection to AI integration with a boilerplate response, while simultaneously pushing forward with AI initiatives that appear to lack seamless integration or full functionality with their own flagship products.
This example is perhaps the most compelling evidence yet of UserVoice being used to dismiss fundamental community concerns and strategic feedback, even when those concerns are widely shared and when the company's own internal initiatives appear to be inconsistently executed. It clearly demonstrates neglect even on issues central to Proton's identity and user trust.

UPDATE COMMENT: July 23, 2025
Adding another critical observation that further illustrates the challenges in UserVoice management:
The "Auto ReConnect Feature for VPN" idea (originally posted March 7, 2018, with 23 votes) was recently [DECLINED] on June 16, 2025. The Admin response stated, "Kill Switch fixes this."
However, it's crucial to note that when this idea was originally submitted in 2018, the Kill Switch feature did not exist. While a basic Kill Switch feature was introduced to some Proton VPN clients by 2021 (and the "Advanced Kill Switch" later in 2023), the Admin's response in 2025 still declines an idea from seven years prior based on a solution that wasn't available at the time the problem was identified. This demonstrates a significant disconnect: an idea from seven years ago was declined based on a solution that either didn't exist or didn't directly address the core "auto-reconnect" functionality requested. This highlights a disregard for the historical context of user feedback and reinforces the lack of timely, relevant engagement on this platform.
You can view the specific post here: https://protonmail.uservoice.com/forums/932836-proton-vpn/suggestions/33546952-auto-reconnect-feature-for-vpn
This example, alongside the inconsistent "COMPLETED" statuses and the presence of unmoderated spam, continues to underscore the systemic issues preventing UserVoice from being a truly transparent and effective channel for the Proton community's voice.

UPDATE: July 23, 2025
Adding further observations regarding the ongoing management of the UserVoice platform, which continue to underscore the points raised in this post:
"COMPLETED" Statuses & Timelines: While a "COMPLETED" status for "iPad support" (Proton Calendar) was recently observed, it highlights a significant timeline: approximately two years from idea submission to completion. More concerning is the apparent discrepancy, as the UserVoice update states both portrait and landscape mode are available, yet official roadmaps (or other sources) may still indicate only portrait mode. This inconsistency in communication, even for a completed feature, creates confusion and undermines trust in the platform's accuracy. Furthermore, a second "COMPLETED" status briefly appeared today, only to vanish shortly thereafter, indicating potential instability or unreliability in the platform's displayed information.
Continued Presence of Irrelevant Content: An idea titled "Know About Alaska SFO Terminal" (discussing airport terminal layouts for an airline) remains active on the platform. This blatant example of off-topic spam, despite having been commented on and reported, highlights a continued lack of active curation and removal of irrelevant content, further diminishing the platform's credibility.
Ongoing "Black Hole" for This Post: Despite recent moderation activity on comments within this very discussion (e.g., removal of an unhelpful comment), this post itself continues to remain without any official status (neither "Under Review," "Started," nor "DECLINED"). This reinforces the "black hole" phenomenon, where the core feedback on UserVoice management remains unacknowledged, even when the discussion around it is being monitored.
These observations continue to demonstrate that the UserVoice platform suffers from inconsistent moderation, significant delays, and a lack of transparent, reliable updates, leading to "UserNeglect" even when positive changes are attempted.

⚠️ IMPORTANT UPDATE: July 20
My reposted UserVoice article ("Request for better UserVoice standards for posters and moderators"), which advocates for proactive moderation and clearer content guidelines to address spam, currently remains without an official status update. As of today, it is neither marked as "Under Review" nor "Declined," indicating it is in a 'black hole' state without immediate moderator action. This lack of engagement is consistent with the broader activity observed on the UserVoice platform; the "Recently updated ideas" section continues to predominantly display "DECLINED" posts from July 18, 2025. While "Started" statuses do appear sometimes, the current trend visible on the platform heavily leans towards declines, further underscoring the ongoing issue of UserVoice neglect and limited positive interaction from Proton.
