I’d love to see Proton Wallet expanded with a new feature: ProtonPay, a private alternative to Apple Pay / Google Pay. This should be technically possible, since mobile platforms are now opening NFC access to third parties – for example, Apple recently enabled providers like SumUp and PayPal to use the NFC chip on iPhones, and Android devices have already allowed third-party wallets to integrate with NFC payments for some time.
Here’s how it could work:
- Add existing payment methods: Users can add bank cards or payment services (PayPal, Wise, Revolut, Sparkasse, Klarna, etc.) to Proton Wallet, verified by their providers.
- Proton Card (virtual): Proton Wallet could provide a private “Proton Card” (with a card number, PIN, CVC/CVV/CID/CVC2/CVV2, expiration date, etc.), acting as a bundled card. This Proton Card could combine multiple balances automatically – e.g., using €3 from PayPal + €4 from another card to complete a €7 purchase.
- Account-bound security: The Proton Card would be strictly tied to the Proton Account and Wallet. Card information could only be accessed inside Proton Wallet itself, never sent by email or exposed externally. To view card details (e.g., for manual entry), the user would need to unlock with FaceID/biometrics. The card cannot be imported into another wallet or Proton account, ensuring it cannot be stolen or reused elsewhere.
- Tap-to-Pay integration: Just like Apple Pay, users could double-press the power button, confirm with FaceID/biometrics, and pay instantly – but without exposing card details to Big Tech.
- Peer-to-peer payments: Proton Wallet could allow Tap-to-Pay between Proton users. Example: if a friend cannot send via IBAN, they could just transfer directly via ProtonPay by tapping phones, with funds routed to your chosen account.
- Privacy shield: The Proton Card would act as an extra privacy layer, hiding your real payment details and making it easier and safer to pay both online and offline.
This would turn Proton Wallet into a complete, privacy-first payment hub – combining security, convenience, and user control in one place.
