Proton Drive appears in the Files app and when an app opens a single file, but it is missing from the “choose a folder” picker of every app (ACTION_OPEN_DOCUMENT_TREE), so no app can sync or back up into a Proton Drive folder.

Android only lists a provider there if its root declares FLAG_SUPPORTS_IS_CHILD and the provider implements isChildDocument(). In android-drive 3.1.0 the root only sets FLAG_SUPPORTS_CREATE (extension/Account.kt) and DriveDocumentsProvider doesn’t override isChildDocument. The folders already allow create/write/delete, so adding the flag and the child check should be enough.
