Proton Drive - Save feature integration
I want to be able to save files or links etc. from the iPhone "share" menu. Right now, I can only save to the iPhone Files app which has Proton Drive, but I would prefer to save directly to the Proton Drive app.

Add speech to text functionality to Proton Docs.
Having the ability to speak to the Proton Docs application and have it turn the speech into text would make it much easier to compose long-form written material, especially if it is sensitive by nature. I do not trust other programs to keep such things safe and private.

Render correct photo ratio in Photos and Album overviews
Currently all photos are rendered with the same portrait aspect ratio, which does not correctly represent the images correctly. It would be nice if users had an option to display the original aspect ratio all scaled to the same height or some other dynamic layout which displays the full image scaled down for the overview.

pdf reader improvement
If a link is to a pdf and so opens in a pdf reader embeded in a proton page, I can click the Download button and the file will download with the proper file title. However within the reader is a download arrow. If you were to click on that to download the file the file name is a garbled number and letter sequence. I've tried this with another cloud drive service which the process looks nearly identical except that clicking the download arrow retains the file name. I'm guess most people would hit the Download button but as a frequent user of pdr readers I habitually hit the download arrow, which garbles the file title in the Proton Drive's case.

Delete phone photos after upload
Option to delete uploaded photos from phone
Just uploading pictures is not enough if I need to check and delete the pictures by hand. There should be the option to one-click delete uploaded pictures or do that automatically after a certain time.

Allow Proton Drive to use my smartphone's office app
Other drives like Onedrive and Google Drive give the option to use the smartphone's own office apps to open documents, spreadsheets, slides, etc...
I really miss that as I cannot open my sheets, for example, unless I download them. And if I make a change in them, then I have to upload it to the Proton Drive afterwards.
Sorry, but just to be clear. In those other drives like Onedrive, you do not need to download the sheet in other to open it and if you edit the sheet, then Onedrive automatically replace the older version as you save the edited sheet.
If you implement this, it would also release the pressure on the enhancement of Proton Docs, as users could just use some other office in their phone like Word and Libreoffice as you work more on Proton Docs and (I hope) Proton Sheets.Other drives like Onedrive and Google Drive give the option to use the smartphone's own office apps to open documents, spreadsheets, slides, etc...

Move photos from photos tab to other folders
Hi, thanks for making Drive available for Linux. I use Fedora 39 KDE.
I also use Photo backup via Android (Samsung S23)
When I open all my files/photos in Linux web browesr, if I right click images, I can move to respective folders. As well as preview, move, rename, get link & delete.
If I open the folder that uploads Photos, via Android, this option is not available. Only download, upload or delete.
Perhaps this is a feature in the making?185 votes -

Option/simple setting for all files to be online only
I would like to be able to set my Proton Drive on my Mac to have all files accessible online only. I constantly find that files have downloaded to my Mac, reducing my disk space, even when I have not opened up the file in the Proton Drive.
I have tried to correct this numerous times by going through every file and setting them individually to online only, but this setting does not "stick". It would also be good to be able to set directories online only on a case-by-case basis.2 votes -
data validation list for spreadsheets
A data validation LIST option would be welcomed for spreadsheets. Each cell in the column would have a drop down menu with the available options of the predefined list.

.XLSX files - duplicate files / read-only
When opening an existing .XLSX file within Proton Drive, this creates a (1).xlsx file. Ideally it would open and update the existing file, otherwise it will continue to generate multiple duplicate files (1).xlsx, (2).xlsx, etc. Alternatively, an option to open as a read-only version here (for original uploader) might be helpful.

A thought on spreadsheet architecture (from a grateful user)
Hi Proton Team,
First off, I want to say that what you've built with Proton Docs is genuinely impressive. End-to-end encrypted spreadsheets that actually work is no small feat, and I really appreciate the engineering that went into making this happen.
I've been using your spreadsheet app and thinking a lot about architecture lately. What you've accomplished is amazing—truly. But I also believe that trying to build the same thing in different ways can teach you a lot, even if you never ship it. I wish I could rewrite all my own apps in every language and framework just to see what I'd learn. But if I had to choose just one thing to rewrite, one experiment that felt like it might reveal something fundamental... I'd rewrite a spreadsheet app in SolidJS.
I know how this sounds. It feels a bit like suggesting someone reconsider their religion, and I've been hesitant to even bring it up. And look—I could be completely wrong about this. I don't know your codebase. I don't know what you've already tried or what constraints you're working under. I'm looking at this from the outside, and I'm sure there are a hundred things I'm not seeing.
But here's the thing that keeps nagging at me, and I could be completely wrong about this—I don't know all the facts of your architecture or the constraints you're working under—but: spreadsheet cells are literally signals.
I mean this in the most fundamental, computer science sense. A cell holds a value. When that value changes, dependent cells recalculate. That's it. That's a signal. And React... React doesn't really think in signals. It thinks in snapshots and reconciliation.
Right now, when I edit a cell in your spreadsheet, React has to:Re-run component functions
Build a new virtual DOM tree
Diff it against the old tree
Figure out what changed
Update the DOMOr at least, that's how I understand it works. I could be missing optimizations you've implemented that I can't see from the outside. But in principle, a spreadsheet cell doesn't need a diff. It knows exactly what changed—its value. And it knows exactly who needs to know—the cells that reference it.
This is where signal-based reactivity (like what SolidJS uses) becomes almost eerily perfect for spreadsheets. Not because SolidJS is "better" (I know how loaded that word is), but because the mental model matches the problem domain exactly:
A1 = 5 // This is a signal
A2 = A1 * 2 // This is a computed signal
When A1 changes, only A2 updates. No diffing. No reconciliation. No re-rendering parent components. Just: "A1 changed, tell A2." That's it.
I realize I'm oversimplifying massively, and maybe I'm missing something fundamental about why this wouldn't work in practice. I know you've got virtualization, you've got workers handling crypto, you've got complex state management for collaboration, and you've got a whole ecosystem built on React. There are probably architectural decisions I'm completely unaware of that make this harder—or maybe even impossible—than I'm imagining.
But I also can't shake this feeling that you're fighting React's fundamental architecture every time a cell updates. You've done an amazing job making it work (seriously, the fact that it works as well as it does is a testament to your engineering), but it's like... you've built a beautiful house with the wrong foundation for the soil type, you know?
Or maybe I'm completely off base. Maybe React is actually perfect for this and I'm just not seeing it.
Here's what I'm actually suggesting (and please feel free to ignore this):
Maybe it's worth experimenting with a signal-based approach for just the grid layer? Not a full rewrite. Not even for production. Just... to see. To learn what happens when the mental model aligns so perfectly with the problem. It could be SolidJS, or Preact Signals, or even a custom implementation. The framework doesn't matter as much as the fundamental reactivity model.
Because I genuinely believe you'd learn something valuable, even if you never ship it. Sometimes the act of building the same thing differently reveals insights about the original that you couldn't see any other way.
And if the theory holds—if signals really could be 5-10x faster for spreadsheet operations (which the benchmarks suggest, though I know benchmarks lie), and if they use significantly less memory—then for something like Proton Docs, which people use for work, where performance and reliability matter, those insights might be worth exploring. Even if it just confirms that React was the right choice all along.
I know this is a big ask, even as an experiment. I know you have a roadmap. I know React works and has a huge ecosystem and hiring is easier and a million other practical reasons to stick with what you have. And I'm not saying you're wrong for using React—it was probably the right choice when you started.
But if I could rewrite just one of my apps to learn something fundamental about architecture, it would be this. A spreadsheet in signals. Because it just... fits.
I'm just saying... spreadsheet cells are signals. And sometimes when something just makes sense at that fundamental level, it's worth exploring. Even just as an experiment.
Or maybe it's not worth it. Maybe you've already run these numbers and they don't add up. Maybe there's something about signals that breaks with encryption, or collaboration, or some other piece I can't see from here. I genuinely don't know.
Again, I love what you've built. I'm rooting for you. And if you've already considered this and decided against it—or if I'm just fundamentally misunderstanding the problem—I completely understand.
Thanks for listening to my rambling.Hi Proton Team,

Exclude folders/files
Thank you for the desktop application, it was necessary and I am very satisfied, excellent job. On the other hand, it would be very useful to have the ability to exclude files/folders, either by selecting them or using a regular expression. For example, excluding folders like 'node_modules'.

Unable to sync photos backed up to ProtonDrive with PC
When I back up photos to ProtonDrive, they don't sync with the desktop app, so I can't use or view them locally on my PC or Mac.
I would like to be able to synchronize the photos I have backed up to Photo with my PC or Mac folders. It's a pain to have to move and copy them manually.
I have to view them online every time, and it takes a long time for thumbnails to display, which is very inconvenient. Thumbnails are cached to a certain extent, but even those cached thumbnails are slow to display.
