Hi Proton Team and Community,
First of all, thank you for making Proton Pass such a secure and privacy-focused credential manager. Passkey support has been great, but there is still a major roadblock when it comes to migrating Passkeys into and out of Proton Pass.
Currently, transferring passkeys between different password managers is a huge pain point because they cannot be exported via traditional unencrypted CSV/JSON files. However, the FIDO Alliance has published the Credential Exchange Format (CXF) and Credential Exchange Protocol (CXP) as standard specifications specifically designed to solve this issue.
Major competitors in the industry (such as 1Password and Bitwarden) have already begun implementing these standards, and Apple/Google have introduced dedicated APIs on iOS/macOS and Android to support secure, cross-platform bulk credential transfers (including Passkeys and SSH keys).
Why this is crucial for Proton Pass:
Removes Migration Barriers: Many users (including myself) want to fully migrate from 1Password or Bitwarden to Proton Pass but are held back because we cannot bring our dozens of accumulated Passkeys with us.
Avoids Vendor Lock-in: True to Proton’s open-source and pro-consumer philosophy, users should have complete data ownership and freedom of movement for all credential types.
Industry Standard Alignment: Adopting the FIDO CXF/CXP standard ensures Proton Pass remains highly competitive and compatible with the evolving global passkey ecosystem.
What needs to be implemented:
1 Support importing industry-standard encrypted JSON files containing passkeys from other password managers.
2 Support exporting Proton Pass credentials (including Passkeys, SSH keys, etc.) using the secure FIDO Credential Exchange standard.
3 Integrate with the native OS credential export/import APIs (like ⁠ASCredentialExportManager⁠ on iOS/macOS).
This would be a massive quality-of-life update and a true differentiator for anyone looking to switch to the Proton ecosystem. Hope the dev team can prioritize this on the roadmap!
