Agreed! It's the reason I've not entirely switched at the moment.
I can't move my things from Google Drive/Photos to a comparable version of Proton Drive/Photos - simply because the jump between the "Free" version and the "Plus" are too large and expensive.
Right now I pay a yearly amount of about $21 for 100GB with Google One - I've been using their services for over a decade at this point so I have 55GB of used space so far. All the photos of my life's memories. I can't just delete those to switch over. I worry about only having them on my external because it's also kinda old and external HDD are expensive for me. Having the cloud option gives me sound of mind.
However.. if I wanted to go from "Free" to the next tier.. I have to jump to their "Plus" sub - which it gives more space 200 GB BUT the price is more than double what I'm paying or need at this point at about $50-52 after tax.
Assuming that they make a basic plan I can afford and has the 100GB space I'd personally need (or if they let you buy 10GB at a time ala cart) I would be more ready to be a long term supporter of their services and make the last push for a switch (..though I am wary of their AI, I want that to be completely opt-out or opt-in options, better yet completely separate.. so I'm not subsidizing it directly with a plan...)
And I don't care about the wallet, AI, or their Meet apps - I can't remove these things to pay less? That seems silly to me. And they would get many more converters from Google and Microsoft if they made these kinds of changes.

At this point, security questions have been shown to not be an effective way to validate a users identity. At this time the recovery email address is our sole means of identifying users ownership of an account.

I saw another post talking about this and this is what I had said about my situation:
