How can we improve ProtonMail?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  2. iOS app support multiple accounts

Either allow multiple accounts to be open simultaneously in the iOS app or add option to switch between accounts without having to formally log out and log in between each swap.

Despite allowing multiple aliases for a single account, if you have a personal account but also shared an account (eg with a spouse) aliases don’t suffice. The idea of forwarding every email from one account to another is archaic, lose for user and lose for proton mail because you’ll be storing the same message twice unnecessarily.

Multiple account support is a basic feature for email apps.

  3. Protonmail app for Purism's Librem 5 smartphone.

In keeping with Protonmail's commitment to privacy and security I would like them to develop an app for Purism's upcoming Librem 5 smartphone. This would provide a genuine mobile alternative to Google and Apple.

  5. Functioning search

The search function still does not work. Entering a search for known rewords located in the body of the email still pulls up no results. Your search feature essentially does not work and needs to be fixed ASAP.

  6. Web Key Directory support

I propose adding support for modern key lookup - Web Key Directory.

ProtonMail could automatically lookup recipient's key when composing e-mails via WKD and add that key to the contact book.

Some e-mail clients like Enigmail or Mailpile do it that way. There are providers already supporting this like posteo.de and some prominent organizations like kernel.org and gentoo.org

Openpgpjs has support for WKD lookups since version 3.0.12: https://github.com/openpgpjs/openpgpjs/releases/tag/v3.0.12

  7. Protonmail App for Android is Very Slow

    Hello Protons,

I use Proton mail as my central and master repository for all email correspondence (paid-up). However I'm finding its slow performance in android is really killing my productivity and my frustration is at breaking point; now looking to find alternatives.

I understand that a full encrypted service such as protonmail may never achieve the same level of responsiveness as other apps like Gmail, however there is a limit at which no longer becomes usable.

I find the app to be excessively laggy, I wait for actions to respond, by which time I've moved on elsewhere in the app…

  8. Recover account with GPG key or full wipe

I recently lost access to my account because my 2FA backup codes were lost. However, I did upload my own GPG key which I still have. It would be nice if there were a way to recover my account with GPG key.

Maybe this could be done after a set period of account inactivity.

  10. *Unlimited* Disposable Email Aliases

Startmail explains it perfectly. They offer unlimited disposable aliases, which expire within a given amount of time. They also offer custom aliases which can be saved and used indefinitely.

It is the disposable alias which will help protect privacy, when submiting an email to an untrusted recipient. After all, how much privacy do we have if our fixed emails become the foundation for building and selling our marketing profiles, just as is done by gmail. We limit personal activity virtual trails by disposing of aliases for casual uses. But, unlike custom aliases, which build on our identifiable original email address,…

  12. Onion V3 Address Access To Protonmail

Protonmail already uses a old v2 onion address format (https://protonirockerxow.onion) it would be nice to have the new v3 onion format address that has many benefits over the v2 technology:
    1. Better crypto (replaced SHA1/DH/RSA1024 with SHA3/ed25519/curve25519)
    2. Improved directory protocol, leaking much less information to directory servers.
    3. Improved directory protocol, with smaller surface for targeted attacks.
    4. Better onion address security against impersonation.
    5. More extensible introduction/rendezvous protocol.
    6. A cleaner and more modular codebase.

The new addresses looks like 56-characters domain ( ex.: 4acth47i6kxnvkewtm6q7ib2s3ufpo5sqbsnzjpbi7utijcltosqemad.onion ).

Apparently some sort of vanity address is possible (more limited…

  14. you are so incredibly lacking a crucial and not new feature called Challenge-Response - yubikey, get on board and stoptelling us it's coming

The fact the your only option for 2FA is a well-know n to be easily hackable authenticator app on a smartphone? You have advanced encryption, but have no technological leadership or innovation for a token like yubikey? Get with the times, I use Yubikey as my sole source of 2FA for fastmail.com, and these tokens are not new, nor are they complicated nor are they expensive. Step Up or stop bragging! Walk the Walk if you are striving to sell "security - sorry Google authenticator is NOT security, so please step into and demonstrate some integrity - the lack of…

  15. Could you plan a partnership with other secured email services?

eg. with the trendy affordable Tutanota

A/ Could you find a way you could both validate the other's quality of security? Create a Label, a norm, an audit protocol?

B/ Could you offer a secured email transit between protonmail and tutanota?

    Most secured email users usually wish to keep the email within the same service without transit though unknown equipment;
from protonmail to protonmail or from tutanota to tutanota.

This induces a reductive use since we have to encourage/force the other end to use the same service
    which is not always successfull.

And few will use the boring PGP double…

  16. make protonmail faster

    Search is slow
Deleting multiple (15+) emails is slow
    Emptying the trash is slow

This service is so slow that I'd rather just let the NSA read my email

  20. kill switch (auto destruction)

It would be cool if we could set up a special password.

If we enter it then it completely erases all emails.

In many non-democratic countries, we are obliged to give our password during police interviews.

If you don't give your password, you can be arbitrarily stopped for an indefinite period of time.

Therefore a killswitch solution would be extraordinary.

For more credibility this killswitch must work with the 2FA.

We can't be blamed for having an empty mailbox.
