1. Feature parity between Windows/Mac and Linux

   I've started using Proton VPN in Windows, and it's a great app, full of resources, with great graphics, many resources, ability to auto-start, start minimized, auto-connect to a profile... The Mac version also looks very similar to Windows'.

   However, recently I changed to Linux (Pop OS, Ubuntu based), and although I had no problems installing the GUI version of the app, it does not even remotely resemble the Windows/Mac version. It's a very, veeeeeeeeery simple app, without the majority of configuration options present in their other OS's counterparts.

   Proton VPN team should dedicate more time to make the Linux version of the app the same that we see in Windows/Mac, so we can have in Linux exactly the same wonderful experience the app propitiates in Windows and Mac.

3. Custom country per the webpage/website and app

   Some websites require access from certain country to work and it is annoying to always manually switch the server country while it also changes country for other websites (which may be unwanted).

   To improve this, allow VPN extension user to define per web site (and per app - for a VPN desktop: https://protonmail.uservoice.com/forums/932836-proton-vpn/suggestions/50600438-split-tunneling-select-which-app-connects-through ) rules so user can select VPN server country for any defined website/app. Maybe such config. section can be combined with existing "split tunneling" section.

4. Better support for GNOME's "Background Apps" feature

   Not every Linux desktop environment comes out with support for tray icons, the most infamous one for that being GNOME, one of the most popular desktop environments. Since GNOME 44, it focuses on a "Background apps" feature, which uses xdg-desktop-portal to find apps running in the background, with the ability to show them.

   Personally, I must say I like that feature, and would like to avoid installing extensions adding back the tray. At the same time, I'd love it if the Proton VPN was able to start minimized on login in my prefered DE, especially since it's possible for other applications (such as Geary, for example).

   Thank you for considering this feature request, and I apologize if i pointed to incorrect APIs for the task.

5. Access to DirecTV streaming

   While connecting to a US server, it would be a nice addition to have access to the DirecTV streaming service.

   As of now, there's no way to use it for that streaming service.

6. Add PIN lock for iOS app

   Drive, Mail, and Pass for iOS already have the ability to be locked by a PIN. Add this to the VPN app.

7. Fix Free Tier Country List: Linux/Config file Shows 10, GUI Apps Display Only 5

   This request addresses an inconsistency across ProtonVPN platforms regarding the number of countries available on the Free plan.

   Currently:

   Linux GUI, CLI, and manual configuration files (OpenVPN/WireGuard) correctly expose 10 free countries, matching what the backend actually provides.

   Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and tvOS apps display only 5 countries in their GUI, even though random connecting to all 10 is possible via backend/API.

   This creates a confusing discrepancy for users and contradicts the behavior of Linux clients and manual configs.

   Proton and web pages also show mixed information (some mention 5, others implicitly reflect 10), further adding to user confusion.

8. Suggestion: Temporary VPN Connection for Login Assistance

   Dear Proton VPN Team,

   I am a user from mainland China. When trying to log in to the Proton VPN desktop client, the login process often fails due to local network restrictions. This makes it difficult for users in regions with strict internet controls to access the service, even if they already have valid accounts.

   I would like to suggest adding a feature that allows the client to temporarily enable a lightweight VPN connection (or use a fallback method) during the login process. This would help users bypass local blocks and successfully authenticate, after which the normal VPN connection could proceed as usual.

   Such a feature would significantly improve the usability of Proton VPN in restricted regions and make the login process more reliable for affected users.

9. "Random" option when creating a profile

   When creating or editing a Standard VPN Profile, you select the country and then are given the option of "Fastest" or a given city/server. ProtonVPN used to have the option of to select "Random" here as well, ie a random server from within a specific country, but that seems to have been removed. Please add that option back.

10. Proton VPN firewall, post quantistic and other improvements

    • the possibility to link proton profiles to the account, so when I use the vpn on different devices I can find my own profiles
    • the possibility to change the server with a dedicated button which will follow the current VPN settings (same type, protocol, country, and so on) just using a different server
    • the integration (for mobile Android) of a firewall which can block internet connection for selected apps from user. This would be really really useful to block internet connection to app that doesn't need it (clock, calculator, file manager, and so on). In the market place there are some solutions (like NetGuard) but they are obviously incompatible with a VPN since they use the same approach of a VPN. Using constantly Proton VPN all apps have to use internet through the VPN so an integrated firewall would be extremely powerful.
    • the possibility to have a post quantistic encryption to avoid quantistic computer hacking

    • the possibility to link proton profiles to the account, so when I use the vpn on different devices I can find my own profiles
    • the possibility to change the server with a dedicated button which will follow the current VPN settings (same type, protocol, country, and so on) just using a different server

11. Set a Favorite Server as Default

    In the next Proton VPN update, I suggest that the user have the option to set a favorite server as default. That way, whenever someone turns on their computer or phone, they are logged in directly to it. For example, I really like the performance and speed of server 101 (Brazil). But having to select it every time is quite inconvenient.

13. Nevada

    Please add servers back to Las Vegas. It was a huge reason why I chose proton back in 2021. Im from Nevada but work out of the state which causes all sorts of issues when browsing or trying to log into financial institutions.

14. allow port forwarding on a router-based wireguard vpn

    Please consider allowing port forwarding on a router-based wireguard vpn. I am unable to find any documentation on whether this is currently possible or not. I have an openwrt router using a wireguard vpn. I am happy with it, but it would be better if I could forward a port into my home network to allow plex access from outside the house.

15. Launch Linux GUI app on boot

    I saw a completed post asking the Linux app on boot, but I guess it is not the GUI version, or perhaps not the one for Fedora.

    For me on Fedora with the GUI version I have to manually launch Proton VPN every time.

    By manually launching Proton VPN:
    1 - The system remains unprotected for a certain time;
    2 - Creates a needless ritual for every session;
    3 - Nullifies the purpose of the kill switch.

    ~/.config/autostart/ , Startup applications or GNOME extensions does not work because the GUI fails to connect during login. Only the kill switch starts correctly this way. A native “start with system” option would solve this.

    Right now we have "auto connect" and "start up minimized" but not a "start up with the system"

16. Feature request – Smarter Wi-Fi-based auto-connect rules on iOS

    Hello Proton team,

    First of all, thank you for Proton VPN and the whole Proton ecosystem. I’m a paying user and I really appreciate your focus on privacy and on open, well-documented security.

    I’m writing to request a feature that I believe matches a very common and “natural” use case for VPNs on mobile phones, especially on iOS.

    Current situation

    On iOS, we can use auto-connect and some Shortcuts automations, but there is no simple way to express the following behaviour:

    Automatically connect Proton VPN on any Wi-Fi network, except for a few trusted ones (for example my home Wi-Fi).

    Automatically disconnect Proton VPN when the device is no longer connected to Wi-Fi (i.e. when switching to cellular data).

    With the current options, we can approximate this behaviour using iOS Shortcuts, location-based automations, and manual workarounds, but it is fragile, complex to set up, and far from user-friendly.

    Requested feature

    It would be extremely useful to have, directly inside the Proton VPN app (or account settings), something like:

    A list of “Trusted Wi-Fi networks” (by SSID), for which:

    Option: Never auto-connect VPN on these networks

    Option: Automatically disconnect VPN when connecting to these networks

    A global rule such as:

    “Auto-connect Proton VPN on any Wi-Fi network that is not in the Trusted list.”

    “When not connected to Wi-Fi (cellular only), automatically disconnect Proton VPN (optional toggle).”

    This would perfectly match a very common pattern on mobile:

    At home (trusted Wi-Fi) → no VPN needed.

    On any other Wi-Fi (work, café, hotel, public hotspot) → VPN should automatically protect the connection.

    On cellular data → user can choose whether the VPN should remain on, but many people would prefer to turn it off automatically to save battery and data.

    Why this matters

    This behaviour feels like a “default” expectation for many privacy-conscious users on smartphones. Right now, implementing it requires:

    A good understanding of iOS Shortcuts / automation;

    Several separate automations (per location, per network, etc.);

    And even then, it still doesn’t handle “Wi-Fi disconnect” events cleanly.

    If Proton VPN could offer this directly as a first-class feature (especially on iOS, where system-level triggers are limited), it would greatly simplify the life of many users and make Proton VPN feel even more “smart” and integrated in everyday usage.

17. Replace location switch timers with advertisements

    The way that the free version of Proton VPN currently works (on mobile, at least) is that the locations users can switch to are randomised, and there are timers that force you to wait between switches. Not only is this annoying for users, but from a business perspective, it doesn't seem very profitable. I understand that these features are here to encourage people to buy the premium version, but that leaves the people who don't want a subscription not being profitable at all. My proposal is to replace the timers and randomisation with needing to watch an ad to switch locations. This would not only be less annoying for users, but also more profitable, so I think both sides would benefit from this change.

    The way that the free version of Proton VPN currently works (on mobile, at least) is that the locations users can switch to are randomised, and there are timers that force you to wait between switches. Not only is this annoying for users, but from a business perspective, it doesn't seem very profitable. I understand that these features are here to encourage people to buy the premium version, but that leaves the people who don't want a subscription not being profitable at all. 18. Name IP addresses specified for split tunneling

    It would be helpful to be able to name or tag IP addresses that are added to the split tunneling list. Names would help users avoid deleting an address by accident, and easily review the sites that have already been specified.

19. Provide warnings for recent legislature changes in selected country

    Proton should provide a warning note against countries that have made recent legal changes that impact the internet. This could include things like the UK's Online Safety Act causing websites to behave differently or more serious legislation that allows the government to track or control internet access.

    The goal of this feature would be to warn Proton VPN users about impending or recently implemented law changes for their awareness and safety online.

20. Autoconnect when wifi is lost, disconnect on trusted wifi,

    I use a vivo Fold 3, there's no VPN option available. Only from within the proton app.
    Like Surfshark, an auto connect when no WiFi would be so good. And then, auto disconnect when on trusted WiFi, would be a great addition. As my router is always connected through proton VPN, there's 2 vpn's active when I'm home. And always need to manually disconnect the VPN ... In 2025... Please add these features.
