How can we improve Proton VPN?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.

  1. Add general location selection to app (like browser extension)

    In the ProtonVPN extension I can search for a location, then click the location and it will connect to (I think) the best server in that location. For example, I can search for 'Phoenix' and just click that, and it will pick a server in the Phoenix area for me (I am assuming it's the best one at the time of connection).

    In the apps, you have to select the individual server manually. Please make the app able to connect by selecting a general location like the extension.

    Please make light mode an option. Dark mode is very difficult to read.

  3. Albanian servers

    Add servers from Albania.
    Google adds are not available in Albania so when connected to Albanian servers you won't see add on YouTube or other Google services.
    I know many will thank me for this

  4. IP Visibility Toggle

    Add the ability to either show or hide your current connected IP address. This feature would be a nice addition for those who stream or share a screen and would prevent accidental IP leaks. Something as simple as an eye symbol next to the IP address or an option in settings to hide the IP address or show it when needed would be a nice addition.

  5. Show city in UI (top right)

    I've noticed (top right of UI) that ProtonVPN displays location-based information i.e. the country, server, and IP address only, it currently does not include the current city. Adding this piece of information could significantly improve the functionality.

  6. Submit Linux package updates in official distro repos

    Proton VPN is open source and uses well-known and established components of the NetworkManager stack. Due to these two things, there is virtually nothing standing in the way of the Proton VPN team from building and submitting packages officially to Linux distributions like Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu, EPEL, etc. Proton VPN is further enhanced by packaging upstream by increasing the availability of Proton VPN software packages in the global software package mirroring network (deterring censorship) and benefiting from improved transparency and openness by building packages through distribution-supported build systems, which are often reproducible.

  7. Feature to manage connected vpn clients

    Having a Web based connection/client management page would help monitor, authorise, link/unlink vpn clients.

    Details:

    Since my plan supports multiple connections, I use it across multiple devices of mine and that includes my wife's iPad. What I find uncomfortable currently is that there's no way to manage the different connected clients from say, a Web portal.

    So in this particular instance, I need to install proton vpn on my wife's iPad using my proton master password. That's uncomfortable and feels potentially unsecure.

  8. Split Tunneling - Make selected apps or IP's VPN-only

    When using split tunneling you are able to select which apps or IP's you want to be routed through the VPN. Would it be possible to to also make the selected apps or IP's only work through VPN? This way if the VPN goes down these apps would blocked but you wouldn't need to kill all internet traffic. This is a feature that Private Internet Access has.

  11. Automatically Revert to preferred profile/fastest server after maintenance

    Scenario: A user is connected to a preferred/fastest server and eventually it goes into maintenance and moves the user to the next fastest connection. However, when the preferred/fastest server goes back up, the user has to be mindful that he/she has to manually revert back to the preferred/fastest server. Also, there is no notification that the preferred/fastest server is back up.

  13. Quick Toggle for Split Tunneling

    Introduce a dedicated button on the main interface of the application on PC, allowing users to quickly toggle the Split Tunneling feature on or off. This enhancement aims to provide convenience and efficiency for those who frequently have to switch this option, eliminating the need to navigate to settings so often. This quick toggle button would be similar to the existing Port Forwarding and Kill Switch toggles.

  14. Set apparience on Android as well as on IOS

    I've just seeing the IOS app screenshot from https://protonapps.com/protonvpn-android

    The buttons are located at button and the android version located at top. Is any way to change this and the two version looks the same?

    This idea or feature was sent at Proton with Bluesky and Twitter/X

  17. Add regex support to split tuneling

    When an app gets updated, the executable path may change. This breaks the split tuneling setup, which has to be remade through the ui.
    The suggestion is to allow user to add executable paths with regexes.

  18. Change Finland's flag in Proton VPN Android TV app

    Finland's flag looks really strange in the Android TV app. The blue cross is really thin, and the colour is clearly off as well. You can find the correct dimension and colour at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Finland. Much appreciated.

  19. Ability to change default Wireguard port 51820

    Hello, please add an option, to change the default 51820 Wireguard port, to any port of choice, this will help mask VPN connection and will help people who live in countries that block VPN traffic.
