I agree that this feature would be useful and want to note that the ability to set expirations using filters could be sufficient in some of the other commenters' use cases (if using Sieve was easier or if the ability to set expiration were added to the filter wizard), but that only is applied to incoming emails when they first arrive. It would be good to either be able to set expirations on a folder/label basis or else to be able to make shortcuts for sets of operations the user frequently performs together, so one could apply a label and a separate expiration simultaneously to one message.
