How can we improve Proton Drive?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

  1. Encrypted export for files and folders

  2. Don't default move deleted files to Trash, and make this configurable and more transparent.

    I only found out by accident that deleted files end up in an online-only Trash folder instead of being deleted. From a privacy and security centric company I find this quite shocking.

    I would expect at the very last for this to be:

    a) Opt-in, preferably with flexible retention.
    b) Much, much more explicit, and definitely not entirely obscured by the app and only discoverable via the web interface.

    I don't want to have to remember that files I deleted are still stored at online at Proton, and having to go to the web to ensure they're really gone.

    You must also encrypt protondrive and protonmail android app user data and encryption key, with a local password(app lock) to help protect from offline, unauthorised access.

  5. Device folder-level access control

    Now that the entire contents of my Proton Drive are accessible from all devices that I log into it with, I'm nervous that a compromise on one device could lead to a complete takeover of all my data.

    I'd like to suggest a feature where folders can be given an access control list, similar to NTFS permissions on Windows, but device based. The web portal would have access to all folders always, but from the web portal, you could define which devices are allowed read/write access to specific folders.

  6. Nextcloud style Photos backup configuration (Configure source & destination, year, etc)

    I really like the Nextcloud photo sync feature, it allows for configuring any source folder on the phone and defining what the destination folder should be. This means that the pictures are automatically organized by source location on my backup repo.

    Furthermore, it has the feature to allow for creation year drilldown, meaning it will create the Year/Month folders automatically within the destination that I chose in the repo. It would be cool to see some enhancements along those lines. Thanks for all the great work!

  7. Add versioning for Excel files

    Each modification to an excel file causes the current version to be replaced during the synchronisation process.
    Enable versioning on this type of file too.

  8. Add an "upload photos only while device is charging" option to the Android app

    OneDrive's mobile app has an option for its camera backup to only backup photos while the device is charging. I would like to see this added to ProtonDrive. I dislike how currently it instantly uploads as soon as the photo is taken.

    Self-explanatory title. Photos saved as "favorites" will appear in the widget (android and iOS).

  10. Shared folders for Photos backup

    It would be great if shared folders for Photos backup could be implemented. My wife and I take heaps of photos with our iPhones and want to sync to a single shared folder.

  11. Enable syncing from external drives that are Exfat formatted

    Make it possible to sync files from external SSD's/ HDD's that are formatted in Exfat. Exfat is commonly used to use the external drive on Windows and Mac together. At this point this isn't supported by Proton Drive.

  13. File REPLACEMENT functionality

    Please add a button that allows us to replace any file with a newer one.

    Current Problem: After we have generated a link for a file, and we want to upload a newer/updated version of that same file, we have to upload a completely new file and generate a new link. This is problematic if we have already shared that link with folks and don't want to send them piles upon piles of new links for the same or updated file.   14. Support folder picking on iOS

    When using another app like Logseq or Obsidian, you cannot use ProtonDrive because the ProtonDrive iOS app does not implement NSExtensionFileProviderSupportsPickingFolders.

  16. Shortkey Ctrl+Alt+D to open a quick search bar on Windows

    The user enters a shortkey like Ctrl+Alt+D to pop up a search bar to find a file.

    The idea is the same as Google Drive's shortkey Ctrl+Alt+G on Windows.

    This is a time saver!

    I want to host a OneNote notebook on Proton Drive. And is it possible to set up Proton Drive to act like OneDrive? I want to store all my documents online if possible, and OneDrive is not encrypted.

  18. Add additional storage to an existing subscription. +1 TB = +...$/month +2 TB = +...$/month and so on

  19. Do not occupy storage when files are deleted in the Trash.

    Give us an option to auto-delete trash after 30 days, and at the same time, do not occupy storage when we delete files. That is, do not occupy storage when files are in the trash temporarily for 30 days. One drive, Google Drive, and many other cloud storage systems work this way. If you implement this, then Proton Drive will be the best of the best. Please send this feedback to your team and developers.

    Have all proton products be available in one downloadable app across multiple platforms.

    Bonus feature: Have functionality of Thunderbird/Outlook where you can add your different email inboxes, calendars, etc.
