I just tested this with a Microsoft account using outlook desktop and it seemed to work fine. I had both Microsoft and Proton accounts receive calendar events sent by the other and both had Accept, Decline, etc. on the email (and had the event in the calendar in a pending state). When the Receiver then responds it shows their response in the calendar.
