G'day folks at Proton AG.
Any progress? I notice this matter has been discussed for nearly 10 years now with no resolution in sight. Ten years in computing is like a century in other industries!
It's bloody disappointing that a reference point for privacy and digital sovereignty like yourselves, years and years after your customers started demanding 100% open-source applications, still rely on Google Firebase or any other Google service. You're forcing users who want to "de-Google" our devices to jump through Google's hoops whether we like it or not. Your best-known competitor, Tuta, doesn't do this and has their apps available on F-Droid. What's stopping Proton, with more resources than Tuta, from doing the same?

Matrix, Threema Work or Nextcloud already exist for that. Nextcloud is even wider: a whole ecosystem that, if had a broad public commercial infrastructure instead of focusing so much on self-hosting, many people would choose over Proton.
I reckon some of you overestimate Proton AG's capacity. It's not such a big company that it can take on so many fields, and such complex ones at that (there are requests here for it to build its own browser and even its own mobile OS O_O).
"He who grasps too much holds little", as the saying goes, and I reckon Proton would be better off focusing on developing and polishing the services and apps that are still half-finished rather than entertaining new ambitions: contacts still can't be synced on Android; key apps like Mail or Drive still don't have a genuinely OSS, de-Googled version (Fdroid), which makes them useless on de-Googled Android "distros" like Lineage or Graphene; the VPN's graphical interface doesn't work on Linux except on a couple of distros; Drive can't be used in a file manager as just another network folder, etc, etc.... Do we really need Proton to divert more resources into building a Nextcloud Talk when there's still so much left to finish at home?
