    This really should have been thought of as an option to be implemented from the get-go. It's massively not user friendly to have to constantly select "load images" for certain senders you already trust or for emails you've previously already loaded images for before!

    100% this.
    Evidently the option to delete additional addresses was removed so that adding additional addresses could become a paid feature, but like the OP stated, just keep the address counter incremented and then you can allow users to delete unwanted addresses (permanently disassociating them from their accounts) without it impacting the ProtonMail business model.
    This seems like a small but very annoying oversight on ProtonMail's part!
