1. Support Launching Proton Mail with Specified Account

   I use Proton Mail with multiple accounts. By default, Proton Mail (on MacOS) launches to the previously opened account. I would like to be able to specify the desired account to open on launching the application, e.g. with an --account flag.

   This would make it possible to create desktop shortcuts to open the desired account. Currently, users must first launch Proton Mail, then click on their currently open account, then click "Switch or Add Account", then click the desired account. That's three additional clicks required to open the application to the desired state.

2. Manage Email Expiration Dates in Proton Mail

   Introduction

   When receiving marketing emails, I want to be able to identify messages with expiration dates, especially those that have already expired, in order to effectively declutter my inbox and actively contribute to reducing the ecological impact associated with storing these expired messages.

   Problem and Context

   The "Email Expiration Date" project aims to reduce the environmental impact of commercial emails by facilitating the deletion of outdated messages. Currently, email clients lack integrated tools to effectively manage the deletion of emails sent by advertisers who have set an expiration date. Implementing this feature in email clients would provide users with effective cleanup tools based on email expiration dates.

   User Benefits

   Integrating this feature would allow users to more easily clean up their inboxes by automatically deleting expired messages they are unlikely to read. With just one or two clicks, they could remove hundreds of unnecessary messages, improving email management efficiency and contributing to the reduction of the carbon footprint associated with email storage (see Ressources section).

   Implementation Proposal

   We are considering several options for implementing this feature:

   1. Search Option: Add a search option to find all expired messages in an email inbox. Users can then simply delete the messages if they wish.
   2. Virtual Folder/Tab: Create a virtual folder (or tab) listing all expired emails, offering the user the option to delete them with a single click.
   3. Expired Message Alert: Display an alert whenever more than xx expired messages are present in the email inbox, offering the user the option to delete them with a single click.
   4. Automatic Deletion: Allow the email client to automatically delete expired emails from a given sender from a displayed email. In this case, it is essential to obtain the user's explicit consent so that no emails are deleted without their authorization.
   5. Preference Center : Show the complete list of bulk email senders to the user. In this list, they can enable or disable automatic email deletion according to their preferences (and unsubscribe via List-Unsubscribe).

   What we propose not to do:

   1. Individual expiration notifications: It is not recommended to create individual alert messages for each expired message. In addition to generating too many alerts, some spammers (and marketers) could take advantage of this to generate notifications using expiration dates.

   Options and Settings

   To ensure this feature is flexible and respectful of user preferences, the following options should be available:

   • The ability to prevent the email client from deleting emails from certain senders via a list of senders not to be deleted.
   • An option to add a sender to this list from the email reading screen.
   • The ability to disable cleanup tools based on expiration dates, although the feature should ideally be enabled by default for any new installation of the email client or after the update adding this feature.

   Challenges and Considerations

   It is crucial that this feature be discussed within the community to anticipate and address potential challenges. For example, measures must be taken to prevent the malicious use of expiration dates, such as dates set before the email is sent or just a few hours after sending. The user must always remain in control of deleting emails in their inbox.

   Priority

   Given the climate emergency and the importance of reducing the environmental impact of technology, we request that this feature be considered a high priority. Every technology must adapt to minimize its environmental impact.

   Usage and Adoption

   Currently, only a small number of mass emails have an expiration date. According to a study by Orange in France, as of May 2024, about 5% of emails have an expiration date (source: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/jonathanloriaux_orange-email-expiration-date-activity-7211730790152306689-AscM).

   This is mainly due to the difficulty of enforcing an evolution of an internet standard. Although mass senders are very interested in deploying expiration dates in their emails, few sending platforms allow the addition of SMTP “Expires:” headers, and no major Mailbox Provider has implemented the technology.

   Therefore, it is essential that the entire ecosystem (mass senders, mass email sending solutions, and email clients) advances to make this project a reality.

   Expiration dates in emails are mainly intended for mass emails. At this stage, it does not seem relevant to allow an email client user to set an expiration date for emails they send.

4. Add "Forward All" to conversations

   With the Conversation grouping feature enabled, I miss the ability to forward the text of all messages in the conversation in the body of the message. This could be

   • a toolbar button that appears when a conversation is selected in the conversation list,
   • a panel button when a message in the conversation is open,
   • an item in the context menu of conversations.

   After selecting this command, a new message window opens with an empty recipient field and a filled subject field (in accordance with the conversation title). If desired, I can remove the unnecessary: ​​greetings, signatures, messages that should not be included in the forwarded conversation log.

5. Adding a "are you sure" prior to sending messages

   Clicking "send" should bring up a prompt that asks if you want to send this out. This would be helpful for people like me that fail to properly check their e-mails before sending them out. There were a few times where I forgot to attach a necessary file and having to follow up with another e-mail.

7. Introduce a phishing section.

   Currently Phishing emails share the same space as SPAM. While spam is not as close as harmful as phishing emails. I would like to suggest the introduction of a phishing folder, so that each email that is potentially one of that kind should be placed there. Because it has a higher security risk. Those emails should have largest and strongest security mesaures. So they need an special treatment. Is not just undisired email, they are harmful email built by criminal minds. So, please. They need to be treated with extreme security measures and one way to start that part is to tag them accordingly.

   This suggestion is just to help building a more safe world for everyone. The phishing emails has been evolving during the last time so they need different strategies to be handled.

8. Tip or new position mail appendices.

   It would be easier to remove pictures of the mail immediately.
   Proton Mail Keep the pictures related to privacy hidden in the mail message.
   At the bottom of the mail, the pictures, logos etc. can only be viewed and downloaded.

   Downloading Logos and nothing meant giving pictures with storage only unnecessary data.
   Place an extra icon to remove it directly per picture.

11. Preview attachment in app without downloading (Proton Mail Android)

    Right now when previewing an attachment in the Android app it is first downloaded to the regular Downloads folder and then opened with another app.

    Ideally an attachment would be previewable in the Proton Mail App, similar to how it is possible in the Proton Drive app.

    Alternatively, it could be shared with another app without first being downloaded to the Downloads folder. Other Mail apps like Boxer do this.

    The current behavior is very tedious as you have to manually go to your Downloads folder to delete files you only wanted to preview.

12. Merge the same emails that come at the same time and you make option to decide to make it ***** or not or archive or not

    I occasionally receive emails that could be spam, but I often can't identify them until the app notifies me. Managing messages across multiple accounts is challenging, especially with the overwhelming volume of emails I receive. Ideally, I’d like the option to merge various email accounts or delete forwarded messages to keep my inbox organized. Additionally, there should be a feature allowing me to manually mark emails as spam or not before the app issues a warning, as some messages may indeed be spam. Lastly, emails should not automatically move to the archive folder without my consent.

15. Octopus-Style E-mail Security: Allow users to disable or delete Primary ProtonMail Aliases

    Dear Proton Team,

    I recently received an alert from the ProtonPass app that my main @protonmail.com address had leaked on the dark web— I also doublechecked this via “Have I Been Pwned” and other services. It's great that ProtonPass is catching these breaches, and notifying us as users so that we can mitigate this. But it’s also frustrating because I went to great lengths to keep my address private.

    Ultimately, I am aware that strong cybersecurity measures (strong password, OTP/hardware 2FA key, Proton's proprietary security measures, Sentinel) are what protects the account security when 'push comes to shove'.

    So I appreciate Proton's existing measures, which are top notch. (You guys even have an ISO 27001 these days, which is a significant accomplishment.)

    At the same time, having my primary Protonmail e-mail address exposed on the darkweb is a thorn in my eye, because now I’m vulnerable to receiving phishing e-mails. As you know these are becoming increasingly sophisticated, composed by AI so the spelling and grammar errors are not as easy to pick out as the era when you received '1 million dollar offers from a rich Nigerian prince'.

    So in tandem with your strong cybersecurity measures, I am trying to eliminate attack surface from the user end / the human error.

    Because even a vigilant tech-savvy user can have an off-day and fall prey to a simple mistake, such as accidentally clicking on a phishing e-mail link. Although I already use SimpleLogin for many external services, there are situations where I prefer using a ProtonMail address directly.

    So to manage this risk, I switched my default Protonmail to a new Protonmail email alias I own.

    However, I now notice I unfortunately cannot delete or disable my old, compromised Protonmail e-mail address.

    This leaves the door open for attackers to spam me with well polished phishing e-mails. When your e-mail leaks this is only a matter of time.

    What I’m really asking for is a way to disable or permanently delete my primary ProtonMail address so that this specific e-mail address cannot receive e-mail anymore and cannot be reused by someone else.

    You could cap it like 1 deletion per year, as you already do for other Protonmail aliases.

    And this could work under the condition that at least one primary Proton address (whether it’s @protonmail.com, @proton.me, or @pm.me) remains active at all times, to ensure we can always continue to log in.

    Think of it like an octopus (my favorite animal) — if one limb (my primary Protonmail e-mail) gets compromised, I just want to release that limb and continue functioning normally, and grow a new limb (new e-mail alias). The core (Proton Account) remains unharmed, regardless of which Protonmail.com / Proton.me / pm.me it is connected to, to login and manage. Before I delete the old one, I can migrate all the services to the new e-mail alias.

    This approach, similar to how SimpleLogin handles alias management by allowing you to disable, delete, or block specific addresses, would significantly enhance our e-mail security.

    Because this way you become a 'moving target to attackers'.

    So if they then acquire outdated details, they can't do jack with them, because you don't use them anymore and these e-mail addresses can't receive phishing e-mails. :)

    Allow search to

    • Select multiple "search in" options (search in all selected folders)
    • Filter by state (eg, only show unread and/or starred emails)

    Allow saving a specific search, eg. "starred mail from folder X" accessible in the sidebar.

    Ideally allow selection more than one selection in the "search in" field
