Adding a new event should not require being online. It's a local thing, to be handled by the computer's timekeeping... IMO that limitation is the only thing you'd need to change in order to extend the functionality of the Calendar app. It's a small change but it has great implications.
On mobile I stay offline most of the time, not because of connectivity issues (both wifi and unlimited data are available 24/7) but because I don't like leaving my smartphones connected just for the sake of it. Having to turn on connection just so I could add a calendar item is one of the things that made me ditch Google Calendar, for example...
