Email opening in modal
I prefer using Column layout in Proton Mail but what I find awkward in that kind of setting is to read emails on the right side of the screen. What I'm proposing is to add an option to open emails in the center of a screen in modal-like fashion. That would be great. (:

@Josef I agree with you. It makes more sense to implement that or similar feature for Row layout.
Email clients are practically the same since their conception. They all look more or less the same. I don't say that Proton should reinvent the wheel, but they could at least give it a try with some new approaches when we talk about presenting and reading emails. I think that they don't think enough about the actual reading experience of a common user, and emails are all about reading. For instance I often find font in some newsletters too small to read them comfortably but there is no easily accessible option to increase the font of the message. What I am trying to say, there is definitely still room for improvement. -

Although Column mode is useful, I would really like to see the option to open each message in the Row list in a separate window that open on top of the screen.
Also would like to see the Row view add a split screen below the list, that shows the contents of the message in the row above, which is much easier to read than in the column view.
I currently have these features in Webmail which I find much easier to read and navigate than Protonmail.
