I honestly don't think 4 euros a month is too expensive.
If you have to consider the cost that Proton spends on setting up their own servers and infrastructure across the world, 4 euros a month is very reasonable.
And as long as we are using it, there will be maintenence costs, so it doesn't seem feasible from a business standpoint to have any sort of single payment lifetime benefit.
