I completely agree that this should be a basic feature. In the business world, Excel, Word, and PDF files are the most commonly sent attachments. Having to download Excel files every time and quickly save them somewhere just to view them is very cumbersome and leads to file chaos. Or it means I have to download an additional app on my mobile devices just to be able to view the attachment at all. Word documents can be viewed easily enough, so this feature should be implemented if you want to compete with Outlook in terms of user-friendliness.
